University of British Columbia - Okanagan CampusDepartment of PsychologySSHRC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Clinical Psychology for Healthy Communities

Posting date: November 3, 2026

Closing date: December 15, 2026

Anticipated Start date: July 1, 2027

The Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Clinical Psychology for Healthy Communities in the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). We seek an exceptional emerging scholar whose research will address local and societal challenges related to mental health, wellbeing, and/or chronic disease care among underserved and/or marginalized populations. The ideal candidate will foreground equity, diversity, and/or sustainability in their work, and establish an innovative, community-engaged research program.

Candidates for this position must: (a) have a PhD (a UBC requirement) in Clinical Psychology from an accredited program and, (b) be eligible to be licensed as a psychologist in the province of BC.

The full-time appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) in the Department of Psychology, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This is an external search (i.e., we are seeking to hire someone who does not currently hold a UBC faculty appointment). The position is expected to start on July 1, 2027 or soon thereafter. The anticipated salary range is commensurate with experience and level ($115,000-$135,000 for the rank of Assistant Professor and $130,000-$160,000 for the rank of Associate Professor).

The successful candidate will engage in research, teaching and service within the Department of Psychology’s CPA-accredited clinical psychology program. Our program attracts high caliber students from across Canada and internationally, and is widely recognized for its commitment to outstanding student training in both research and clinical practice. Faculty members in our department are known for their innovation across several research areas, including mental health, addictions, chronic disease prevention and care, neuropsychology, and the interpersonal processes that support wellbeing. We embrace interdisciplinarity, cultivate strong community-based partnerships (e.g., local health authority, nonprofit organizations), and are committed to conducting high-impact research with implications for policy, practice, and the wellbeing of communities.

The Department of Psychology is a dynamic, collegial, and collaborative department. We strongly value the enhancement of diversity within our department, including diversity of identities and experiences, as well as approaches to research that expand beyond traditional Western paradigms, including Indigenous ways of knowing. The department actively fosters an inclusive environment through initiatives such as PACE (Psychology Allyship, Community, and Equity), a departmental committee focused on increasing diversity, equity, and inclusivity for students, staff, and faculty.

About the Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2 Program

The Tier II Canada Research Chair has a term of five years and may be renewed once for a second five-year term. Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars who, at the time of nomination, are typically within 10 years of their first full-time independent academic research-related appointment. Candidates who are beyond this timeline may still be eligible if they have experienced eligible career interruptions, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, COVID-19 impacts, or family care responsibilities, and receive approval through the program’s Tier II justification process. UBC acknowledges that certain circumstances such as illness, disability, family and community responsibilities (e.g., maternity leave, parental leave, leaves due to illness, leaves due to caring for family members, or slowdowns due to chronic illness or disability) may cause career interruptions that legitimately affect an applicant’s record of research achievement. These interruptions will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. We encourage applicants to highlight in their application how interruptions have impacted their careers in order to allow for a fair assessment of their research productivity.

All CRC nominations are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat. Please consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria.

In accordance with the 2019 Addendum to the 2006 Canadian Human Rights Settlement Agreement, UBC’s CRC Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Action Plan (), and pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights code, the selection will be restricted to members of the following federally designated groups: Indigenous Peoples, racialized people, people with disabilities, and women and gender equity-seeking groups.

Applicants to CRC positions are asked to complete this equity survey () as part of the application, and candidates from these groups must self-identify as belonging to one or more of the federally designated groups to be considered for the position. Candidates must also provide their name in the survey to be considered. The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program is implementing the Tri-agency Policy on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation and associated Directive on the Tri-Agency Policy on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation.

The objective of the Tri-agency Policy on Citizenship and Membership Affirmation is to establish a process that will provide reasonable assurance that programs, funding opportunities and/or appointments intended for First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada are held by First Nations, Inuit and Métis, in Canada. For your Indigenous identity to be considered under the CRC program, you must affirm in the equity survey linked above that you identify as First Nations, Inuit or Métis of Canada, and candidates who have self-identified as Indigenous and are affiliated with a collective identified in the Directive must complete the secure form prior to nomination submission.

Personal information is collected under the authority of sections 26(a), 26(c) and 26(e) of the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The information you provide will be used to determine whether you qualify for participation in this restricted process, and to advance accessibility, equity, and fair adjudication in this process. Data will be collected by the Equity & Inclusion Office and only the names of those eligible for the search process will be shared confidentially with the search committee. All responses will be stored in a secure database.
