Join National Gas and help be the energy behind the change.
National Gas is responsible for operating and maintaining Britain's national gas transmission network, helping to keep the lights on, businesses running and homes warm.
We manage the critical infrastructure that safely and reliably transport gas across Great Britain, supporting the energy security that millions of people depend on every day.
While delivering for Britain today, we're also preparing for tomorrow. Through innovation, investment and the development of future energy infrastructure, we're helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for generations to come.
As a graduate, you'll be given meaningful responsibility from the start, supported to develop professionally, and empowered to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the nation's energy future. Whether you're solving complex challenges, driving innovation or delivering essential services, you'll play an important role in an organisation with genuine purpose.
Join us and help shape the future of energy.
About the Role
Join our Major Programmes team and play a key role in supporting the delivery of major infrastructure projects that help keep Britain's energy network running safely and reliably. As an Assistant Project Manager Graduate, you'll gain hands-on experience working on projects that upgrade critical systems across National Gas infrastructure, giving you exposure to engineering, operational and technology-focused environments.
This is a unique opportunity to work on a nationally significant programme while developing the skills and experience needed for a future career in project management. You'll work alongside experienced project managers, engineers, contractors and project teams, gaining insight into how large-scale projects are planned, coordinated and delivered.
Day-to-day, you could be:
Supporting project planning and coordination activities.
Helping manage project documentation and project information.
Assisting with project reporting and preparing updates for stakeholders.
Supporting budget tracking and project cost activities.
Helping identify and track project risks, actions and issues.
Attending project meetings and ensuring actions are followed through to completion.
Working with colleagues and contractors across different locations to help keep projects on track.
Building an understanding of how engineering projects move from design through to delivery.
Throughout the programme, you'll gain exposure to both the design and delivery phases of major projects, giving you a broad understanding of the project lifecycle. You'll develop strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills while building practical experience in a major infrastructure environment.
About You
We're looking for someone who is curious, proactive and excited to build a career in project management. You won't be expected to know everything from day one, but you should enjoy solving problems, working with others and taking ownership of your work.
You'll be someone who:
Has a genuine interest in engineering, infrastructure and project delivery.
Enjoys organising activities and helping things run smoothly.
Works well with others and builds positive relationships.
Communicates clearly and confidently with a range of people.
Takes initiative and is comfortable working independently when needed.
Enjoys solving problems and finding practical solutions.
Is adaptable and enjoys working across different environments and locations.
Has a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
A standout candidate will be enthusiastic and eager to develop. They'll be comfortable balancing technical understanding with strong communication skills and will enjoy working with a variety of people to deliver successful outcomes. An interest in project management, engineering or technology-related projects will help them stand out.
We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.
What you'll need
You'll hold, or be on track to achieve, a degree in a STEM-related subject. Engineering degrees would be particularly beneficial, although we're open to a range of disciplines that demonstrate strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
We're interested in your potential and transferable skills as much as your academic background. A strong application might include examples of:
Organising projects, events or group activities.
Solving problems and finding practical solutions.
Working collaboratively to achieve a shared goal.
Managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
Communicating information clearly to different audiences.
Using Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
An interest in engineering, infrastructure, project management or technology-focused projects would be beneficial. Experience gained through an internship, industrial placement, university project or extracurricular activity would be advantageous, but it isn't essential. What matters most is your enthusiasm to learn, your willingness to get involved and your interest in developing a career in project management.
A good application will include a cover letter to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Be sure to include any other relevant experience or university modules.
Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

Due to the nature of the role, you'll need a full UK driving licence by the time you join the programme, and access to a vehicle would be beneficial.
