Skills
Must have
- Strong hands-on DSP experience: digital filter design, FFT/STFT/overlap-add/convolution, dynamics, modulation and time-based effects, resampling/interpolation/aliasing
- Able to move from paper/prototype to efficient production implementations
- Real-time audio programming expertise: OS audio architectures, predictable CPU use, profiling and fixing dropouts
- Solid modern C++ (C++17/20) experience in performance-critical code
- Experience building multiplatform music/audio apps with platform-agnostic business logic (DAW/sequencer/mixing model and editing operations)
- Good engineering practices: testable maintainable code, version control, code review, CI
- Autonomous and proactive; breaks down ambiguous problems and drives them to results
- Collaborative; can explain DSP ideas to non-specialists
- Willing to share knowledge: mentoring, documentation
- Focused on the product and how features sound and feel to users
Nice to have
- Experience with mobile/desktop audio stacks (Core Audio, AAudio) and/or Web Audio and WebAssembly
- Experience with cross-language bindings (Djinni, JNI, Objective-C++, Emscripten)
- SIMD optimisation and ARM/NEON performance work
- Audio plugin development (JUCE, VST3/AU)
- Music information retrieval, pitch/tempo/key analysis, or ML-based audio processing
- MIDI, synthesis and sampler design
- Being a musician, producer or audio engineer yourself

About BandLab
BandLab is a social music creation platform used by millions of people around the world, from complete beginners making their first beat to experienced producers and working musicians. We want to make music creation accessible to everyone and keep it fun and inspiring, whatever device they use and whatever their skill level.
Make music sound better for millions of creators
Every time someone records a vocal, plays a guitar through an amp model, applies auto-pitch, drops a loop into a beat or masters a track in BandLab, they are using our audio engine. We are looking for a senior engineer with a strong DSP background to help us design, build and evolve the audio technology at the heart of our products on every platform we ship.
The team you'll join
You'll join the Audio Core team, a small group of specialists building the audio technology behind BandLab's apps. We work closely and daily with a broader, product-focused organisation of product managers and designers, client developers, QA and support teams.
Most of us are musicians, producers or audio nerds, and we care a lot about music. Conversations about a feature usually involve several people and disciplines. You'll be an important voice in these discussions, not just someone who receives tickets.
Our audio engine is a modern C++ codebase with a platform-agnostic core and thin platform layers for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and the Web. A cross-language API generated from a shared interface definition exposes the same engine to every client, whether it's written in Swift/Objective-C, Kotlin/Java or JavaScript.
Day to day, you'll:
- Design and implement audio DSP algorithms. Work on effects, instruments and analysis tools such as:
- Filters and EQs
- Dynamics processors, limiters and multiband compressors
- Reverbs, delays and modulation effects
- Guitar amp and cabinet models
- Pitch detection and correction
- Time-stretching and pitch-shifting
- Noise reduction
- Automatic mastering
- Synthesisers, samplers and music-analysis features
- Build and optimise the real-time engine. Work on the audio graph, mixer, transport, recording and playback, and MIDI so that they stay glitch-free and low-latency on many kinds of devices.
- Own the cross-platform API and business logic. Design the platform-agnostic logic that every client relies on to create and edit songs and mixes: tracks, regions, MIDI, automation, patterns and effect chains. This lets iOS, Android and Web teams build on one consistent, well-tested foundation.
