Position Summary:
Illumina Laboratory Services (ILS) is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Technician to join our Singapore-based clinical genomics laboratory. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role at the cutting edge of clinical genomics, supporting the delivery of high-quality genomic testing to patients across the region.
In this role, you will perform a range of laboratory techniques in compliance with ISO 15189 quality standards, including DNA extraction, DNA quantification, library preparation, and next-generation sequencing using the NovaSeq X Plus platform. You will work with a combination of automated workflows (e.g., Hamilton STAR systems) and manual bench-top assays, gaining broad exposure to modern clinical laboratory operations. You will also play an important role in maintaining a safe, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.
This is an intermediate-level position suited to an individual with established laboratory experience who can independently perform assigned workflows following completion of training and competency assessment. We are looking for individuals who demonstrate strong technical discipline, sound judgement and ownership of their work, and who understand the real-world impact of delivering accurate and timely genomic results. Your contributions will directly support patients and clinicians seeking answers through genetic testing.
Responsibilities
- Independently perform routine laboratory testing to define quality standards and within established turnaround times.
- Handle, process, and store clinical samples in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring accurate labeling and traceability.
- Accurately record laboratory activities, results and observations in laboratory records, logs and electronic systems. Identify deviations, errors or nonconformities, take appropriate immediate action within the scope of the role, and initiate or support the required documentation and escalation.
- Monitor laboratory consumables and reagents, maintaining adequate stock levels and re-ordering as necessary.
- Independently operate assigned laboratory instruments, complete routine checks and maintenance activities, identify and resolve routine equipment or workflow issues in accordance with approved procedures, escalating more complex issues as required.
- Perform general laboratory housekeeping to maintain a clean, organized, and compliant working environment.
- Adhere strictly to Health & Safety (H&S) requirements, risk assessments, and biosafety procedures always.
- Apply approved Work Instructions, SOPs and Quality Management System requirements in day-to-day activities, using sound judgement to recognize when an issue falls outside established procedures and requires escalation.
- Participate in training, competency assessments and audits, contribute practical recommendations for continuous improvement, and support the training of colleagues in activities for which competency has been demonstrated.
- Work collaboratively with team members to achieve laboratory goals, taking ownership of assigned activities and maintaining individual productivity, quality and turnaround-time standards with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Maintain patient and data confidentiality in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
Requirements
- Molecular biology laboratory experience required
- Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques and next-generation sequencing principles, with the ability to apply this knowledge in a regulated laboratory environment.
- Relevant practical experience in a molecular biology, clinical, diagnostic or similarly regulated laboratory environment, with demonstrated ability to perform laboratory activities accurately and with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize routine process or equipment issues, take appropriate action within established procedures, and escalate effectively when required.
- Strong attention to detail, personal accountability and the ability to organize assigned work to meet quality and turnaround-time expectations.
