Full description
We’re hunting for a talented direct response copywriter and creative strategist who has a knack for crafting winning long-form video ad scripts and static ads that scale on Meta and Google. O’Connell Digital Media Group is an Inc. 5000 direct-response agency that has managed hundreds of millions in profitable ad spend for some of the top direct-response advertisers in the world. You’ll join a kick-ass team of account directors, media buyers, copywriters and video editors who share a common goal – generate clicks that convert into high ROAS sales and scale ad spend.
So, if you’re obsessed with performance creatives that convert, have worked in a high velocity agency or fast-scaling, in-house team, and…
You LOVE hunting down the big idea that makes an offer feel brand new…
You LOVE crafting hooks, pattern interrupts and open loops that stop the scroll…
You LOVE seeing the ad in your head, shot by shot, before it exists…
You LOVE directing editors until the finished ad matches your vision…
You LOVE digging into the data to find out why an ad won and how to win again…
… then please keep reading as you may be the perfect fit.
Especially if you’re tired of watching your best scripts get butchered by clients… tired of the freelance hustle chasing your next project… or stuck inside a single brand, writing the same thing over and over.
Note: Please do not apply if you’ve only written brand, SEO, organic or e-comm copy, or if your ad experience is limited to simple UGC ads stitched together from creator footage.

Who Will You Report To?
Hello, my name is Tom Clayson, Head of Creative at O'Connell Media, and I need your help.
Direct Response Copywriter and Creative Strategist (100% Remote) at O'Connell Digital Media Group (Remote) — aijobsearch
I joined O'Connell Media just under a year ago to transform the creative team into one that can scale to meet the projected client growth demands. With most of the heavy lifting done, now I’m focused on expanding our creative strategist team for the next leg of growth. And that’s where you come in.
The volume of winning ads we need to scale based on our forecast exceeds our current capacity. It’s a good problem to have… but it’s still a problem. To keep up, I’m expanding our team of experienced creative strategists who can go from big idea to script to polished finished ad.
What’s the Ideal Candidate’s Background?
You’ve been writing direct-response video and static ad copy for paid social (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) or YouTube for at least two years, in a high-volume agency or a fast-scaling in-house team. Cranking out multiple new creative assets is your normal week. You’ve written for supplement, health or wellness offers that drive traffic to long-form funnels like VSLs and advertorials and/or performance-based e-comm funnels.
Most importantly… you live and breathe persuasive copy. You obsessively break down ads to see what makes them work. You pore over metrics like hook rate, hold rate, CTR, CPA and ROAS, and you love the grind of perfecting a script until it sings. You study the art and science of direct response on your own time because, quite frankly, you simply can’t get enough of this stuff.
What Will You Be Responsible For?
You’ll own every ad you create from start to finish. Here’s what that looks like:
- The Big Idea – Research the customer, the market and the competition, then come up with fresh angles and hooks worth testing.
- The Creative Brief – Turn the idea into a clear brief, including the visual storytelling vision: format, style, pacing and the feeling the ad needs to create.
- The Script – Write the script with visual notes where needed so the video editors know precisely what you’re imagining.
- The Handoff – Brief our dedicated team of video editors with tight specs and a turnaround date. Then hold them to it.
- The Polish – Review each cut, give precise revision notes and keep the ad moving until it’s great enough to go to the client for approval.
How Will Your Time Be Spent?
While any given week varies with client demands, here’s a rough estimate:
- 50% Ideas and Writing – Big ideas, hooks, briefs and scripts
- 15% Research – Customers, markets, offers and competitor ads
- 10% Analysis – Reviewing performance data and feeding what you learn into the next round of ads
What Does Initial Success Look Like?
We hold every ad to three standards. Here’s what success looks like as you ramp up:
- Great Big Ideas – You consistently bring ideas worth testing, rooted in research, with hooks that stop the scroll.
- Great-Enough Scripts – Your scripts are persuasive, fact-checked, and compliant enough to test without heavy rewrites. They don’t need to be perfect. They need to be great enough to test the idea.
- Great-Enough Edits – Your finished ads match your vision, arrive on time and on spec, and are ready for client approval without extra rounds. And you do all this while hitting your weekly ad quota.
What’s It Like Working at O'Connell Media?
We’ve built this role around the thing the best creative strategists want most: control over the final product. Account directors set each client’s priorities, and I’ll give you feedback along the way, but the ad is yours to carry from idea to final cut.
- Real Ownership – You shepherd every ad from idea to final cut. The result reflects your thinking, not a committee’s.
- A Dedicated Editing Team – You’ll work with a team of video editors whose job is to bring your vision to life.
- Access to Data – You’ll see how your ads perform, spot the patterns and build on what’s winning.
- Clear Feedback – You’ll get direct feedback on your work from me and routine coaching to keep sharpening your craft.
- Subject Variety – You’ll write for a range of clients and offers, with fresh subject matter all the time.
- A Rhythm That Works – A short daily stand-up keeps every ad moving.
