Electrical & Instrumentation Project Engineer Graduate (St Fergus)

Join National Gas and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is responsible for operating and maintaining Britain's national gas transmission network, helping to keep the lights on, businesses running and homes warm.

We manage the critical infrastructure that safely and reliably transport gas across Great Britain, supporting the energy security that millions of people depend on every day.

While delivering for Britain today, we're also preparing for tomorrow. Through innovation, investment and the development of future energy infrastructure, we're helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for generations to come.

As a graduate, you'll be given meaningful responsibility from the start, supported to develop professionally, and empowered to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the nation's energy future. Whether you're solving complex challenges, driving innovation or delivering essential services, you'll play an important role in an organisation with genuine purpose.

Join us and help shape the future of energy.

About the Role

Join our Project Delivery team at St Fergus Terminal and help deliver engineering projects that support the safe and reliable operation of Britain's gas transmission network. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a live operational environment while developing your engineering and project delivery skills alongside experienced professionals.

As an Electrical and Instrumentation Project Engineer Graduate, you'll support projects that maintain and improve critical gas infrastructure. You'll gain exposure to the full project lifecycle, from early planning and design through to delivery and completion, while working with engineers, contractors and operational teams across the business.

Day-to-day, you could be:

• Supporting the planning and delivery of engineering projects.
• Assisting with engineering design and technical reviews.
• Helping to coordinate activities with contractors and delivery partners.
• Reviewing technical information and project documentation.
• Monitoring project progress and helping track key actions.
• Working with operational teams and engineering specialists to support successful project delivery.
• Learning how engineering projects are delivered safely within a complex operational environment.

Throughout the programme, you'll develop an understanding of engineering design, project delivery, stakeholder management and safe working practices. You'll build strong technical, communication and problem-solving skills while gaining valuable experience in a critical infrastructure environment. This role provides an excellent foundation for a future career in engineering project delivery and technical engineering roles.

About You

We're looking for someone who is curious, collaborative and excited to develop their engineering knowledge. You won't be expected to know everything from day one, but you should enjoy solving problems, understanding how things work and learning from experienced colleagues.

You'll be someone who:

• Has a genuine interest in engineering and infrastructure projects.
• Enjoys solving problems and finding practical solutions.
• Works well with others and builds positive working relationships.
• Communicates clearly and confidently with a range of people.
• Takes ownership of their work and follows tasks through to completion.
• Is keen to learn and develop both technical and professional skills.
• Has a positive attitude and enjoys taking on new challenges.

A standout candidate will combine technical curiosity with a practical mindset. They'll enjoy understanding how engineering systems work, be interested in how projects are developed and delivered, and feel comfortable working with both technical specialists and project teams. Most importantly, they'll be enthusiastic about learning and developing a long-term career in engineering.

We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.

What you'll need

You'll hold or be on track to achieve a degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Suitable degree subjects include:

• Electrical Engineering
• Instrumentation & Control Engineering
• EC&I Engineering
• Electrical & Mechanical Engineering
• Or another closely related engineering subject.

We're interested in your potential and transferable skills as much as your academic background. A strong application might include examples of:

• Solving technical or engineering-related problems.
• Working on university projects, research or design activities.
• Collaborating with others to achieve a shared goal.
• Managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Communicating technical information clearly and effectively.

Experience gained through placements, internships, university projects or part-time work within engineering, manufacturing, utilities, construction, energy or other technical environments would be beneficial, but it isn't essential. An interest in engineering systems, project delivery and infrastructure projects will help you succeed in the role. Knowledge of electrical systems, control systems or engineering design processes would be advantageous, but you'll have opportunities to develop these skills throughout the programme.

A good application will include a cover letter to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Be sure to include any other relevant experience or university modules.

Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

The Essentials

This is an 18-month fixed-term graduate programme. You must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme. For further information, visit (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

You'll primarily be based full time on-side at our St Fergus Terminal. There may be occasional travel for meetings, contractor engagement, training activities and engineering workshops. Due to the location of the terminal and the nature of the role, you'll need a full UK driving licence by the time you join the programme, and access to a vehicle would be beneficial. Where appropriate, we can provide support with transport arrangements, including hire vehicles, to help ensure travel is accessible.

Your next steps…

You'll be offered additional support and guidance throughout the application process by our Early Careers team. Eligible applications will be reviewed by a human, every step of the way.

You’re only able to apply for one of our graduate schemes, so please consider this carefully. When reviewing your application, if we feel you might be a good fit for something else, we'll be sure to let you know.
