Full description
We are currently looking for a HL7 Interoperability Architect for a 100% remote position supporting a large federal government healthcare modernization project. This role will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Information and Technology (OI&T), designing and implementing enterprise-level healthcare interoperability solutions. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in HL7 v2, HL7 v3, CDA/C-CDA, and FHIR standards, along with experience integrating VistA systems, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications, and modern electronic health record platforms.
The position will collaborate with VA technical teams, clinical stakeholders, enterprise architects, and project leadership to ensure healthcare data exchange solutions align with VA enterprise architecture, the One-VA Technical Reference Model (TRM), and federal security and interoperability standards. The role operates within an Agile environment and requires strong architectural leadership, technical documentation, and cross-functional coordination.
The candidate must reside within the continental US.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain enterprise interoperability architectures that support healthcare data exchange between VistA systems, COTS applications, and external healthcare partners.
- Define and guide the implementation of HL7 v2.x messaging, HL7 v3, CDA/C-CDA, and FHIR standards to enable secure, reliable, and standardized healthcare information exchange.
- Ensure interoperability solutions comply with the VA Technical Reference Model (TRM), One-VA Enterprise Architecture, and applicable federal privacy and security requirements, including FIPS and VA Handbook 6500.
- Support the development and implementation of generic HL7 interfaces for Text Integration Utilities (TIU) and other VistA modules to facilitate integration with external systems.
- Participate in Standards Development Organization (SDO) and Standards Recognition Organization (SRO) activities, including standards reviews, ballot participation, and evaluation of emerging healthcare interoperability standards and vocabularies.
- Lead the development and coordination of architectural documentation, including design patterns, concepts of operations (CONOPs), interface specifications, and technical recommendations, while providing input on project tasks, milestones, and risks to the VA Enterprise Program Management Office (EPMO).
- Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience, with 8–10+ years of IT experience, including at least 5 years focused on healthcare interoperability and HL7 standards in a large enterprise environment.
