People & Culture Manager

Passion, integrity, and a genuine desire to do our best for farmers is what drives us at Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ). We are 100% farmer funded and work on behalf of New Zealand’s sheep and beef producers. Our vision is for thriving sheep and beef farmers, now and into the future. Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s investments play a critical role in underpinning New Zealand’s second biggest export sector.

We’re looking for an experienced People & Culture Manager to lead our P&C team and work closely with leaders across B+LNZ.

This is a broad, hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys pace, variety and getting things done. Reporting to the General Manager, People & Culture, you’ll have genuine ownership of the operational P&C function - providing trusted advice to leaders, leading the team and driving improvements that strengthen employee experience, manager capability and organisational performance.

B+LNZ is continuing an organisation-wide transformation, and P&C has an important role to play. You’ll lead the operational P&C agenda, modernising how we work across the employee lifecycle, challenging existing approaches and seeing improvements through from idea to implementation.

What you’ll be doing

• Lead and develop the People & Culture team, strengthening capability and a more proactive, partnering approach.

• Partner with leaders across B+LNZ, providing practical advice, coaching and constructive challenge.

• Own the delivery of core P&C activity across performance and development, remuneration, employment relations, workforce planning and organisational change.

• Review and improve P&C processes, systems and ways of working, looking for opportunities to simplify, modernise and make things work better.

• Ensure recruitment, onboarding, payroll, policies, systems and other core people processes are delivered to a high standard.

• Support the implementation of leadership, culture, engagement and organisational development initiatives.

• Use people data and insights to identify issues, improve services and support better decision-making.

What we ask of you

You’ll be an experienced senior P&C professional with strong generalist depth and breadth, sound judgement and the confidence to operate with a high degree of autonomy.

You’ll bring:

• Significant experience in a senior generalist HR, People & Culture or HR Business Partner role.

• Experience leading and developing people and building capability in others.

• Strong New Zealand employment relations experience and knowledge of employment legislation.

• Confidence partnering with leaders, including knowing when to coach, challenge and work alongside them to resolve issues.

• A practical, commercial and service-focused approach.

• An action-oriented style - you take ownership, manage competing priorities and follow things through.

• Curiosity and a willingness to challenge existing ways of working and find better ones.

• A willingness to develop and apply your understanding of te ao Māori, tikanga and te reo Māori in your work.

• A strong commitment to the success and prosperity of New Zealand’s sheep and beef sector.

Why this role?

This is an opportunity to have genuine impact in a broad senior P&C role. You’ll work closely with the GM People & Culture and senior leaders, lead a small team and have real scope to shape how P&C operates and supports the organisation.

B+LNZ is an environment where you can be close to the decisions and move good ideas into action without unnecessary layers. You’ll be joining at an important point in our wider organisational transformation, helping build a high-performing, collaborative and purpose-led organisation that delivers value to farmers.

The role is Wellington based, with flexible and hybrid working arrangements available, including the option to work from home up to two days a week. Some domestic travel will be required as we have offices around Aotearoa.

What we offer

This career move builds your expertise in a field that contributes to one of New Zealand’s most important export industries, and the New Zealand economy. We offer competitive remuneration and excellent employee benefits including additional leave entitlements, a fully-subsidised life insurance policy, and a work culture that values and rewards passion, integrity, professionalism and strong workplace relationships based on respect and whānau.
