We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to take ownership of our Medical data pipeline, which ingests, processes, and delivers data from hospital systems into our analytics and workflow tools. This is a mission-critical role with significant growth potential, working directly on infrastructure that supports hospitals, cancer registries, and researchers nationwide.
Part of the pipeline, our hospital data acquisition layer, is written in Rust. You'd work in both languages: Rust where performance and correctness matter most, async Python for the rest. If you've learned Rust, at work or on your own, we especially want to hear from you.
No prior medical data experience is required — just a willingness to learn quickly. What matters most is how you think about data and the clarity of your thinking. You will collaborate closely with product managers, data engineers, and integration teams to keep our systems scalable, reliable, and easy to maintain.
Our stack: Rust (hospital data acquisition layer), async Python (Mypy, Pytest, Ruff, uv), PostgreSQL and MongoDB, Dagster or Airflow for orchestration, Terraform/Open Tofu, and AWS (ECS/Fargate, RDS, Lambda, S3), with CI/CD through GitHub Actions.
Responsibilities
- Own and maintain the core backend services that pull Medical data from hospital systems and transform it for analytics and research
- Design, develop, and optimize ETL workflows for large healthcare datasets
- Build safe distributed systems: async I/O, rate limiting, retries, and ACID guarantees
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code, with strong type-checking, unit and integration testing, and CI/CD practices
- Monitor and improve system performance, reliability, and scalability
- Participate in code reviews (including reviewing AI-assisted code), mentor other engineers, and help shape engineering best practices
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong expertise in Python, including packaging, async programming (asyncio), Mypy, and Pytest
- Strong expertise in SQL (PostgreSQL preferred), including schema design and migrations
- Working experience with MongoDB or another document database
- Experience building, deploying, and maintaining backend services or data pipelines in production
- Solid understanding of Git/GitHub workflows and code review
- Proficiency with Linux command-line tools
