Senior Backend Software Engineer (Python/Django)

Verisk is a global data, analytics, and technology company helping organizations make better-informed decisions about risk.

Within Verisk, Maplecroft combines data, technology, and deep subject-matter expertise to help organizations understand and respond to complex global risks. Its risk intelligence covers areas including climate, human rights, political, economic, and environmental risk, helping organizations make more informed decisions across their operations, investments, and supply chains.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our backend engineering team and help build the APIs and workflows behind the next generation of our client-facing technology.

This is a hands-on engineering role with meaningful ownership. You will write production Python, make technical decisions, and take work from early design through deployment and ongoing improvement. You will also have the opportunity to use AI-assisted development pragmatically to improve how you build, test, and deliver software.

If you enjoy solving substantial backend engineering problems and want your work to support products with a clear real-world purpose, this is an opportunity to do that within the stability and scale of Verisk.

Why joining Verisk Maplecroft

The difference here is the context in which you will be engineering.

Maplecroft has built its business around turning complex global risk into useful intelligence for decision-makers. Its Country Risk Data covers more than 190 political, regulatory, social, climate, nature, and economic risks worldwide.

Technology is central to delivering that intelligence. Maplecroft’s existing technology landscape includes the Global Risk Dashboard, its client-facing risk analytics platform, alongside large-scale data processing technology and the development of its next-generation risk management platform

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to:

• Own meaningful backend engineering work rather than simply receiving development tasks.

• Build production Python and Django services that support client-facing technology.

• Influence engineering decisions around architecture, security, reliability, testing, and maintainability.

• Work closely with product, QA, platform, and engineering colleagues throughout the full software lifecycle.

• Help evolve how the team develops software through automation, modern engineering practices, and responsible use of AI-assisted development.

• Apply your engineering skills to data and technology designed to help organizations understand complex global risks.

You will be joining a specialist risk intelligence business while benefiting from being part of the broader Verisk organization. Maplecroft itself highlights this combination, noting that being part of Verisk provides access to the resources and expertise of a leading strategic data, analytics, and technology company. We have our main office in Bath, but we can offer a full remote contract for this position within UK.

You will bring:

• Strong commercial software engineering experience building and supporting backend services in production.

• Strong hands-on Python development experience.

• Production experience with Django, including its request lifecycle, ORM, migrations, configuration, and testing practices.

• Experience designing maintainable APIs and backend systems using sound REST, data modeling, and relational database practices.

• Good knowledge of authentication and authorization, including common single sign-on patterns and secure API design.

• Experience with automated testing, peer code review, continuous integration, and delivery practices.

• Experience diagnosing application, database, networking, or performance issues in live environments.

• An understanding of cloud-hosted applications and infrastructure as code, ideally within AWS.

• A strong understanding of backend security risks and how to address them throughout the software development lifecycle.

• The judgment to explain technical trade-offs clearly and work effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
