Skills
Must have
- 5+ years building and operating production cloud systems (AWS preferred)
- 5+ years production Python: services, APIs, and data pipelines
- Strong DevOps fundamentals: CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, alerting, real on-call experience
- Experience building integrations with third-party systems and APIs (retries, idempotency, messy data)
- Solid grounding in networking and security practices
- Production experience with PostgreSQL or comparable OLTP database
- Track record owning projects end to end without close supervision and picking up unfamiliar technology quickly
- Clear written communication for asynchronous coordination
- Genuine interest in health technology; comfort with early-stage pace and ambiguity
- Legally authorized to work in the US and reside in the US
Nice to have
- Experience as the first or only infrastructure engineer at a startup
- Healthcare interoperability: HL7, FHIR, or EHR integrations
- Regulated environments: HIPAA, SOC 2, medical devices, FDA design controls, IEC 62304
- Data warehousing and modeling (Snowflake, dbt)
- Event streaming and queues (Kafka, Kinesis, SQS)
- Managing connected devices in the field: provisioning, OTA updates, remote diagnostics
- Image or video data pipelines

About Toi Labs
Toi Labs builds in-home health monitoring that works because nobody has to think about it. Our flagship product, TrueLoo®, is an AI-powered smart toilet seat that optically scans and analyzes waste to surface health signals such as dehydration, GI bleeding, UTI risk, and constipation, without asking anyone to change their behavior. TrueLoo® is deployed across senior living communities today, where it helps care staff catch problems early instead of after an ER visit.
We were named to TIME's Best Inventions, and we're backed by leading bathroom-fixture manufacturers and the NIH.
About the role
You will own our cloud platform: the AWS infrastructure, the data pipelines, and the integrations that connect TrueLoo® to the systems our customers and our own team rely on, from design through deployment and on-call. Data flows from a fleet of devices in real bathrooms, through cloud processing, into the datasets our ML team trains on, the alerts care staff act on, and the external systems that need to hear about it. Keeping that chain reliable, secure, and well connected will be yours.
This is a high-autonomy role on a small team. If you want a clear backlog handed to you, this isn't it. If you want to be the person who decides how the system works, it is.
Reports to: Software (ML and firmware) Lead.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and operate our AWS infrastructure and backend services, defined in infrastructure-as-code
- Own CI/CD, observability, alerting, and on-call, and lead incident response when something breaks
- Build and maintain the pipelines that move device images and telemetry from the field into AWS and Snowflake for analysis, ML datasets, and customer-facing alerts
- Build integrations with external systems, such as customer EHR/EMR and care-management platforms and partner APIs, and with our internal tools
- Keep the fleet healthy from the cloud side: device provisioning, software releases through our fleet-management platform, remote diagnostics, and handling devices that drop offline on networks we don't control
- Bring security, access control, and audit discipline to a system that handles health data, and contribute to the documentation supporting our clinical work and FDA pathway
