Skills
Must have
- A designer who builds. You use Siemens NX as a tool to make things that exist in the real world, not just on a screen.
- Comfortable in a shop. You’ve spent time around machining, fabrication, or assembly and understand what “easy to make” actually means.
- Ownership-minded. You take a design from concept through released drawings and care about what happens after the drawing is issued.
- Curious and resourceful. When something doesn’t work or can’t be made the way you first imagined, you dig in—talk to the machinist, look at the test data, change the design, and try again.
- Fast enough. Once the direction is clear, you produce clean models and drawings and keep the work moving.
- B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- 3–7 years of mechanical design experience, with meaningful ownership of parts or assemblies
- Strong Siemens NX proficiency (modeling, assemblies, drawings)
- Experience designing for manufacturability and machining
- Hands-on fabrication or assembly experience (shop time, personal builds, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated ability to take designs from concept through released drawings
- Must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen or permanent resident) due to export control (ITAR) requirements
Nice to have
- Experience with gas turbine, turbocharger, or other high-speed rotating machinery components
- GD&T and formal drawing release experience
- Familiarity with Siemens Teamcenter or similar PLM
- Exposure to additive manufacturing, welding, or high-temperature materials
- Any personal projects where you designed and built something that had to work
Full description
Volund is building propulsion for America’s next industrial revolution.
We design propulsion systems for cost, agility, and scale, combining advanced automation, precision manufacturing, and rapid iteration to move from prototype to production at unprecedented speed.
Intelligent manufacturing is engineering at scale.
At Volund, engineers operate across the full stack, from concept and simulation to process code and machine execution, ensuring that what is designed can be built and what is built can be scaled.
Role:
This isn’t a pure CAD seat. We need a mechanical engineer who owns engine component designs from first sketch through released drawings, then stays with them while they’re machined, assembled, and tested. You’ll design parts that have to survive real temperatures, pressures, and speeds—compressors, turbines, combustors, housings, and the hardware that ties them together. If a design is hard to make, hard to assemble, or likely to fail in the test cell, you fix it before it gets that far.
What you’ll do:
- Design engine components and assemblies in Siemens NX, from concept layouts through detailed models and released drawings
- Own the design process end-to-end: requirements, concept tradeoffs, detailed design, GD&T, and release into the PLM system
- Design for how the part will actually be made and put together—machining, additive, welding, brazing, or whatever the process requires
- Work with the shop and the test team to turn designs into real hardware quickly, then learn from what breaks or doesn’t fit
- Iterate based on test data, manufacturing feedback, and assembly experience
- Support light-off, characterization, and development testing by being in the loop on how your hardware actually behaves
- Cross into adjacent disciplines (thermal, fluids, structures, materials) when the design needs it
The most important thing
You have a track record of taking a real problem, designing a solution, and getting it built. Maybe you designed and machined a part for a personal project, built a custom piece of equipment because nothing off the shelf worked, or redesigned something at work after the first version didn’t survive testing. You closed the loop between the model and the physical part. We want to hear those stories. That matters more than years of experience or a perfect résumé.
Who you are:
- A designer who builds. You use Siemens NX as a tool to make things that exist in the real world, not just on a screen.
- Comfortable in a shop. You’ve spent time around machining, fabrication, or assembly and understand what “easy to make” actually means.
- Ownership-minded. You take a design from concept through released drawings and care about what happens after the drawing is issued.
