We are seeking a Senior MUMPS Software Engineer to deliver complex enhancements and resolve defects within the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). You will own assigned changes from technical analysis and implementation through release validation, working with our Principal MUMPS Architect on design decisions and application dependencies. The role includes responsibility for complex development work across MUMPS routines, FileMan data structures, List Manager workflows, and XML data exchange. You will evaluate implementation options, contribute to code reviews, and improve software reliability while the Principal Architect provides overall architectural direction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, implement, debug, and maintain complex MUMPS enhancements in VistA, translating requirements into maintainable routines and application behavior.
- Lead investigation of difficult code and data defects; trace routine calls, globals, and package dependencies to establish root causes and assess downstream impacts.
- Implement approved FileMan changes involving complex data dictionaries, nested subfiles, cross-references, and indexes; use appropriate APIs to preserve data integrity.
- Enhance List Manager displays, action protocols, and supporting routines; resolve complex selection, state, refresh, and workflow issues.
- Implement and troubleshoot XML parsing, generation, and approved data mappings within the established framework, including optional and repeating elements and nested FileMan data.
- Define and execute unit tests for assigned changes; investigate failures and support integration, regression, user acceptance, and release validation across affected components.
- Review code and implementation approaches, explain tradeoffs, and share technical guidance; collaborate with the Principal Architect on design decisions and risks.
- Prepare technical documentation for assigned changes and contribute inputs to impact analyses, test evidence, release notes, deployment and backout procedures, and knowledge transfer.
- Follow established coding, configuration management, security, and data-handling standards.
