Summary of Position
The Senior Plant Accountant owns the accounting for our Burlington manufacturing plant. That includes month-end close, inventory and cost accounting, fixed assets, and the internal controls behind them. The role also supports the Operations Controller and FP&A Manager with the plant budget and with weekly and monthly variance reporting.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPlant Accounting & Close (~40%)
- Own the plant month-end close: journal entries, accruals, prepaids, and balance sheet reconciliations, all completed by the close deadline.
- Reconcile the plant general ledger accounts (inventory, GRNI, fixed assets, CIP, accrued liabilities) and clear reconciling items promptly.
- Account for fixed assets and capital projects, from CIP through placed-in-service and depreciation.
- Review plant procure-to-pay activity, including receiving, three-way-match exceptions, and AP aging. Escalate cut-off issues.
- Make sure plant results follow U.S. GAAP and company policy, and help cost center owners understand their numbers.
Inventory & Cost Accounting (~25%)
- Account for raw materials, WIP, finished goods, and COGS, and reconcile the perpetual inventory to the general ledger.
- Maintain standard costs and analyze purchase price, usage, scrap, and overhead absorption variances.
- Coordinate cycle counts and the annual physical inventory, and analyze excess, obsolete, and scrap reserves.
Internal Controls & SOX (~20%)
- Perform and document plant key controls over inventory, procure-to-pay, fixed assets, and close, and keep audit-ready evidence.
- Maintain process narratives and risk-and-control matrices. Support audit walkthroughs, testing, and requests from internal and external auditors.
- Identify gaps in segregation of duties and in process design, and recommend practical fixes.
Budgeting & Variance Reporting (~15%)
- Support the Operations Controller and FP&A Manager in preparing the annual plant operating budget and reforecasts.
Prepare the weekly plant flash and monthly actual vs. budget and prior-period variance reports, with clear explanations of what drove the results.
Skills
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, SUMIFS; Power Query a plus) and experience with a manufacturing ERP such as SAP, Oracle, Dynamics 365, Epicor, or NetSuite.
Traits
- Ability to explain financial results clearly to non-finance plant leaders.
- Solid working knowledge of inventory and standard costing under U.S. GAAP: how variances flow to inventory and COGS, and inventory valuation (lower of cost or net realizable value).
