About ALSO.
We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.
The Role
We’re seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Mapping, to help build and evolve our end-to-end navigation experience. The foundation is in place: a working routing stack, cloud services, and mobile and on-vehicle integrations. Now we need someone to take it further, shipping new features and closing gaps across every layer, from routing engine internals to the app in a rider’s hand to the bike’s display.
This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role for an engineer who moves comfortably across the stack and takes an ask from idea to production with minimal handholding. You’ll work closely with our firmware, mobile, algorithms/ML, and product teams, but you won’t be waiting on them. When something needs doing, you can do it.
What You’ll Do
- Take navigation features and fixes end to end: building, testing, deploying, and supporting them in production.
- Work across the stack as needed: C++ in our Valhalla-based routing engine, Python and JavaScript tooling and services, and Swift/Kotlin on iOS and Android.
- Extend and operate our mapping and routing infrastructure, including map data pipelines, tile and routing services, and vehicle-specific routing behavior.
- Build and maintain cloud services on AWS, including containers, storage, and deployments.
- Work with firmware on BLE protocols and the bike’s constrained display, and dip into that layer when needed.
- Handle real-world edge cases such as offline fallback, rerouting, device reconnects, and poor connectivity.
- Partner with our algorithms/ML engineer on routing quality and data analysis.
- Contribute to team practices through code review and documentation.
What You’ll Bring
- Solid professional experience shipping production software.
- Ability to learn and be productive in unfamiliar languages and layers of the stack. We value range over narrow specialization.
- Working proficiency in several of: C++, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Swift, Kotlin, and Go.
- Understanding of geospatial, mapping, and routing concepts (map data, tiles, routing graphs, map matching, geocoding). Experience with Valhalla, OSRM, or similar engines, or with Mapbox, HERE, TomTom, or Google Maps APIs, is a plus.
