About the role
We are seeking an energetic, people-first technical leader to manage a pod of 8–12 Site Reliability Engineers through every stage of their career journey—focusing on growth, performance, behavior, wellbeing, and shift life. With a team composition that is 60–70% junior engineers, this role is critical in guiding early-career talent into senior SRE professionals. We run a 24x7 operation, and you will rotate shifts alongside another manager, including the night band. This hands-on presence is a defining feature of the job—we believe a manager who works alongside their team across all working bands is best equipped to support, coach, and elevate them.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct weekly 1:1s with every direct report, lead performance cycles, set goals, and build individual development plans
- Address attendance, collaboration, handover discipline, and conduct early and directly
- Proactively monitor fatigue and shift-health indicators before they impact attrition or incident risk
- Maintain accurate Capability Ledger entries for every report and construct training plans aligned with required service-line roadmaps
- Schedule training as dedicated, named seats within the shift rota rather than ad-hoc time
- Execute shift rotas, approve leave, organize relief cover, and control overtime while maintaining a consistent 1:1 cadence regardless of shift rotation
- Own onboarding for new joiners and Academy graduates—covering environment setups, tooling, processes, and the human side of shift work
- Lead interviewing for the group, assign Academy mentors, identify pod successors, and build promotion cases in close collaboration with Service Reliability Leads and Tech Leads
About you
- 5+ years of experience in SRE or DevOps environments, with 2+ years in a direct people management or technical team lead role
- Strong hands-on domain knowledge sufficient to credibly coach junior and mid-level engineers across Linux, Kubernetes, Public Cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure), Observability stacks, and Incident Management processes
- Demonstrated ability and tangible evidence of developing and advancing junior engineers under your leadership
- Full willingness and flexibility to rotate shift bands alongside your pod, including night band shifts
- Comfortable holding direct, constructive conversations regarding behavior or performance without premature escalation
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
