Role Summary (The Why Now)
As Avalara's enterprise Property Tax customer base and transaction volumes grow, manual and rules-heavy compliance workflows are becoming a bottleneck. This role exists to replace them with autonomous, agentic property tax workflows and modernized enterprise systems built for scale. The Sr. Software Engineer raises engineering standards and drives AI-enabled product modernization across a globally distributed team.
How This Role Elevates Avalara
This role turns AI from a tool into a product capability, applying it to extraction, classification, and workflow automation so the team ships faster without lowering quality. The outcome: less manual processing, a more resilient platform, and reusable patterns other teams can build on as agentic property tax capabilities scales.
*Only CVs in EN will be considered*
This position is also open to people with disabilities (PcD), in accordance with Law No. 8.213/91 (Esta vaga também é destinada a pessoas com deficiência (PcD), conforme Lei nº 8.213/91).

Responsibilities
Lead the design and implementation of scalable, secure backend services and application programming interfaces that support property tax workflows.
Build AI-driven services, orchestration pipelines, and intelligent data extraction capabilities for property tax logic.
Modernize complex client workflows by moving manual data ingestion, rules processing, and integration patterns into reliable automated services.
Use AI-assisted engineering tools to improve coding, testing, refactoring, documentation, and delivery speed.
Strengthen continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines, observability, monitoring, and automated test coverage for new services.
Review technical designs and code to improve reliability, maintainability, security, and long-term platform health.
Coach engineers by sharing design patterns, guiding architectural decisions, and raising engineering quality across the squad.
Partner with product managers, architects, and cross-functional teams to deliver measurable outcomes for Avalara and its customers.
12-Month Success Signals
Within the first 12 months, this role will be expected to deliver measurable outcomes in the following areas:
Design and deliver the foundational Agentic Property Tax orchestration layer, including system decomposition, service boundaries, and production rollout plan.
Ship at least one production-ready AI-enabled capability, such as autonomous document classification, intelligent extraction, or automated return preparation validation.
Software Development Engineer - C#/.NET - Property Tax Team at Avalara (Brazil) — aijobsearch
Increase development workflow automation by using AI across coding, testing, and continuous integration workflows.
Help achieve a measurable reduction in cycle time from task creation to production deployment for routine engineering work.
Establish automated testing standards for new services, with a target of greater than 80 percent unit and integration test coverage where technically appropriate.
Mentor at least two engineers by improving their distributed systems design, code quality, and applied AI practices.
Define reusable architectural patterns, application programming interface contracts, and responsible AI guardrails for property tax services.
Bar Raiser Expectations
At Avalara TCO, a Bar Raiser is someone who improves the average performance of the team by their presence.
Bar Raisers:
Hold themselves and others to high standards of quality, ownership, and accountability.
Demonstrate strong judgment in decision-making, especially when tradeoffs affect customers or scale.
Raise the performance of those around them through coaching, feedback, and example.
Simplify complexity and drive measurable business outcomes.
Challenge assumptions respectfully and bring data into conversations.
Leave every team, process, or system stronger than they found it.
Being a Bar Raiser is not about tenure or title. It is about consistently improving talent density, execution quality, and business impact. At Avalara, we hire and promote only individuals who raise the bar — never those who merely meet it.
AI Bar Raiser Expectations
As an AI Bar Raiser, you go beyond baseline AI adoption: you demonstrate applied capability, not just familiarity with tools, and you help raise the bar for others. You identify AI opportunities tied to revenue, efficiency, customer experience, or risk reduction, and you apply AI responsibly, securely, and ethically.
For this role, that means the engineer:
Uses AI-assisted development tools to improve delivery speed, test coverage, documentation quality, and code maintainability.
Designs AI-enabled product capabilities with clear guardrails, evaluation measures, and human review where needed.
Evaluates AI-generated output for correctness, security, maintainability, and customer impact before use.
Shares practical AI patterns with engineers so the team improves, not only the individual.
