Software Development Engineer II, Connections CODEX Team

Build the intelligent systems that transform employee feedback into actionable insights, powering Amazon's journey to become Earth's Best Employer.

We're creating an employee listening system that helps build a workplace where Amazonians can invent and deliver on behalf of customers. Our products and services are used by ~1.5 million Amazonians every day and enable Amazon to collect employee sentiment on topics like Job Satisfaction, Career Growth, Day 1 Culture and more. We generate data, metrics, and insights in the right places to drive high quality, high velocity, high impact decisions.

Our team combines the culture of a startup, the innovation and creativity of an R&D lab, and technical challenges at the scale of Amazon. We expect engineers, product and management alike to take a high-level of ownership for the product vision, technical architecture, and project delivery. Successful candidates will be strong owners, who can work through ambiguity and complexity to deliver results for customers.

Key job responsibilities

• Deliver High-Quality, End-to-End Software Features; Independently design, implement, test, deploy, and maintain software features spanning the full lifecycle. Tackle difficult problems with visible risks or roadblocks (e.g., performance bottlenecks, scalability challenges). Work with distributed systems, real-time data pipelines, and ML-powered sentiment analysis.
• Resolve Operational Issues and Advocate for Excellence; Identify and eliminate root causes of software failures, ensuring permanent fixes. Drive operational excellence by improving team processes (e.g., testing, deployment, monitoring) and advocating for resource-efficient solutions.
• Collaborate Cross-Functionally with Stakeholders; Partner with customers, product managers, and UX designers to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions.
• Influence Technical Strategy and Architecture; Create comprehensive documentation of software architecture, testing processes, and operational procedures. Contribute to team-level architectural decisions and guide future technical investments.
• Drive Process Improvements and Innovation; Identify and implement process improvements (e.g., CI/CD pipelines, testing automation) to enhance team efficiency. Champion operational best practices (e.g., observability, error handling) and reduce technical debt.
• Mentor and Coach Junior Engineers; Actively train new teammates on software architecture, testing, operations, and security. Provide constructive feedback during code reviews and guide peers on best practices.

A day in the life

• Architect and Ship High-Impact Features; Collaborate with product managers and designers to define the scope of a new feature, balancing customer needs with technical constraints. Write production-ready code that scales seamlessly and meets Amazon’s bar.
• Solve Real-Time Production Challenges; Dive into alerts or customer-reported bugs, diagnosing root causes under pressure and deploying fixes that minimize downtime. Proactively tune systems for performance e.g., reducing latency in a critical API or eliminating resource bottlenecks.
• Drive Efficiency Through Process Innovation; Automate testing or deployment pipelines to eliminate manual bottlenecks, freeing the team to focus on high-value work. Champion operational excellence by implementing monitoring tools or reliability frameworks that ensure a high quality experience for millions of users daily.

About the team
Connections CODEX (Content Optimization and Delivery Experience) is the engineering team at the heart of how Connections reaches employees every day. We own the end-to-end journey of Connections content - the systems that create, schedule, and prioritize what employees see, the services that deliver it across devices and channels, and the data platform that turns billions of responses into insight. Every day we reach roughly 1.5M employees and associates worldwide - corporate staff, fulfillment center teams, and Last Mile and Middle Mile drivers alike.

We combine the culture of a startup, the innovation and creativity of an R&D lab, and technical challenges at the scale of Amazon. We encourage invention, expect a high level of ownership from engineers and managers alike, and offer builders the opportunity to build and make history.
