Software Engineer - Backend

Help us shape the digital banking experience of the future! As a backend engineer at Avanza, you'll work alongside people who care as much about modern technology as making a difference in society.

Why Avanza?

Avanza is now looking for a dedicated Software Engineer who wants to help shape the next generation of digital services for savings, investments, and banking. We believe that a passion for technology goes hand in hand with a commitment to society, in teams where community, collaboration, and inclusion are an integral part of everyday life. We believe in a working environment where it is possible to be both ambitious and human, where balance and purpose are just as important as innovation.

Avanza is currently transitioning to English as our primary language. We welcome English-speaking candidates who are comfortable working in an environment where Swedish is still used in day-to-day communication, meetings, and documentation. We expect this to evolve as we continue our transformation.

About The Role

As a Software Engineer at Avanza, you will be a key contributor in an exciting technology journey. We have embarked on a major cloud transformation to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Our goal is clear: by 2030, we aim to be predominantly cloud-based, and during 2026 we are significantly accelerating the pace.

You will be part of one of our 45 autonomous teams, working closely with your Product Manager and designers. Our teams work with Order Management Systems, streaming data, high transaction volumes, data-driven development, and Machine Learning. Depending on which team you join, your day-to-day work could range from further developing our high-performance on-premises environment to building new solutions in the cloud. You will have the opportunity to help define the standards for how we model data and build scalable services in a modern cloud environment. For teams managing core infrastructure or critical systems, rotating on-call duty is a natural part of taking full operational ownership.

Your technical environment

We Are Moving From An Architecture Built Around Gigaspaces And Internal Platforms Towards a Modern, Cloud-based Technology Stack. You Will Work With

• Java as the primary language for our microservices.

• GCP as our future home, where we build for high availability and scalability.

• Modern cloud data modeling, using Google Spanner for application data and BigQuery for data warehousing.

• Communication via gRPC and event-driven flows using Kafka.

• AI-assisted development, leveraging modern tools to explore and set standards for future engineering workflows.

Who are you?

We are looking for someone who loves solving problems and wants to build systems that make a difference for more than two million customers. As an engineer, you enjoy sharing your knowledge and are motivated by the challenge of migrating complex systems to the cloud.

As a person, we see you as a curious and communicative team player who thrives on solving complex problems together with others. You take great responsibility for technical quality and take pride in writing well-structured, testable, and scalable code. At the same time, you naturally take a holistic view and want to contribute not only to the team's ways of working but also to the development of the product.

At Avanza, you'll be part of a culture characterized by humility and openness, where asking questions and sharing knowledge is encouraged, and where we see every challenge or failure as an opportunity to learn and grow together.

We believe that you

• Have at least 4 years of relevant professional experience

• Have solid experience building and maintaining distributed systems and APIs in Java

• Have experience developing and deploying services in a cloud environment (Cloud Native)

• Are curious about AI-assisted development and eager to explore how modern AI tools can enhance our daily work

It is a plus if you have

• Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

• Experience with cloud-based databases such as Google Spanner and/or analytical platforms such as BigQuery, preferably with dbt for data transformation

• Experience with our current technology stack (e.g. Gigaspaces or similar in-memory solutions) to help us bridge the gap between on-premises and the cloud

• Experience working with event-driven architecture (Kafka)

A culture of community and sustainability

We believe the best results are achieved in psychologically safe teams where everyone has a voice. That's why we place great importance on collaboration, openness, and enjoying our work. At Avanza, you will have the space to grow at your own pace and combine your career with a sustainable life.

Our guiding principles are Customer First, Smarter Together, and Better. For Real.

We put our customers at the heart of what we do, collaborate to achieve more together, and constantly challenge the status quo to find innovative solutions that make a real difference.

We operate a hybrid working model and would like you to work from our newly renovated office at Regeringsgatan 103, approximately 2-3 days per week.

We look forward to receiving your application!
