Software Engineer, German Energy Market Processes / Grundversorgung
Design and build the German supply domain (Grundversorgung/Ersatzversorgung) of an energy-utility platform: contract and billing/pricing logic, EDIFACT market communication with network operators, and regulation-as-code, owning features end to end. Backend role (Python/Django, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, AWS), remote from Romania, via Principal33 for an energy-tech client.

Must have
- Hands-on engineering experience on German Grundversorgung processes (systems for a Grundversorger, energy supplier or utility platform), able to explain Grundversorgung vs Ersatzversorgung in data and
- 3+ years of professional software development with a strong backend focus
- Working knowledge of German market communication (GPKE / GeLi Gas, WiM, MaBiS) and EDIFACT message handling

About our client
Our client is a leading energy technology company powering some of the most innovative developments in energy. They build the platform that runs modern energy suppliers end to end — CIS, billing, meter data management, CRM and AI-driven communications — and migrate utilities onto it around the world.
Their German product has to model one of Europe’s most regulated markets precisely. They’re looking for engineers who have already built software for it and know what Grundversorgung really means in code.
Your mission
You’ll design and build the parts of the platform that run Grundversorgung and the processes around it in Germany: contract and supply-status logic, billing and pricing rules, dunning and disconnection flows, and the market communication that ties it all to network operators and metering point operators.
You’ll work in a small, autonomous team with product managers and domain experts, owning features from design to production.
What you’ll do
- Build and evolve the German supply domain on the platform: implicit contracts on move-in, Ersatzversorgung and Grundversorgung states and transitions, supply start/end, move-out, termination and special termination rights.
- Implement billing and pricing logic — general tariffs and price changes with notification deadlines, Abschläge, periodic and final invoices, taxes, levies and Konzessionsabgabe — so it’s correct, auditable and easy to change when regulation does.
- Build market communication flows for GPKE / GeLi Gas, WiM and MaBiS: processing and generating EDIFACT messages (UTILMD, MSCONS, INVOIC, REMADV, APERAK, CONTRL), mapping Prüfidentifikatoren to domain events, and keeping up with BDEW format releases.
- Automate exceptions — rejected registrations, missing meter readings, switching conflicts, disconnection orders — so operations teams handle fewer cases by hand.
- Turn regulation into code together with domain experts: model the rules explicitly, write tests that encode them, and design for frequent change.
- Own your work in production — monitoring, debugging live issues with real customer impact, and improving reliability and performance at scale.
- Raise the bar through code review, pairing and sharing domain knowledge across teams.
What you’ll need
- Hands-on engineering experience on German Grundversorgung processes — you’ve built or maintained systems for a Grundversorger, an energy supplier or a utility platform, and can explain how Grundversorgung and Ersatzversorgung differ in data and logic.
- 3+ years of professional software development, with a strong backend focus.
