Software Engineer

Introduction: A Career at HARMAN Automotive

We’re a global, multi-disciplinary team that’s putting the innovative power of technology to work and transforming tomorrow. At HARMAN Automotive, we give you the keys to fast-track your career.

• Engineer audio systems and integrated technology platforms that augment the driving experience
• Combine ingenuity, in-depth research, and a spirit of collaboration with design and engineering excellence
• Advance in-vehicle infotainment, safety, efficiency, and enjoyment

What You’ll Be Part Of

You will join an established, high-performing engineering team focused on embedded automotive telematics — and we're growing it to scale our positioning capabilities. You'll partner closely with adjacent teams — including platform, connectivity, and systems — to deliver integrated features. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports.

How You’ll Make An Impact

• Implement and enhance positioning features in modern C++ for embedded Linux telematics systems
• Translate customer, system, and technical requirements into clear, testable designs
• Produce and evolve design artifacts — UML diagrams, Component Design Documents (CDDs) — prior to and throughout implementation
• Estimate effort, impact, and cost for design changes; communicate trade-offs and risks early
• Write high-quality, unit-tested code; iterate on design and implementation for continuous improvement
• Diagnose and resolve defects, improving responsiveness, stability, and robustness across components and the broader system
• Participate in planning, status updates, documentation, and timely escalation of blockers
• Perform and receive peer code and design reviews; incorporate feedback and help raise overall engineering quality
• Follow HARMAN processes, Automotive SPICE, and functional safety requirements; leverage HARMAN AI tools to accelerate delivery

What Makes You A Strong Fit

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent)
• 4+ years of professional C++ software development experience
• Proficiency with UML, design patterns, and Linux-based systems
• Hands-on experience building software for embedded systems
• Strong knowledge of inter-process communication and multithreaded programming
• Ability to clearly present status and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Skill in anticipating technical issues and providing timely, constructive feedback to the team
• Very good written and verbal English communication skills
• We see AI as an important part of how work gets done. While tools may vary, a baseline familiarity with using AI to support efficiency, problem-solving, and quality is expected.

Bonus Points if You Have

• Experience with GNSS/positioning technologies
• Familiarity with Automotive SPICE and MISRA
• Experience with unit testing frameworks and performance profiling on embedded Linux

Things To Know

• This role is based in Bucharest and follows a hybrid schedule, with regular in-office collaboration alongside engineering, product, and customer program teams (3 days per week)
• This role may require occasional international travel to other Harman or customer sites

What You Can Expect

• A hybrid work environment that balances flexibility with in-person collaboration, with most office-based roles onsite three days a week.
• Access to a benefits platform with a monthly budget
• Access to employee discounts on HARMAN and Samsung products (including JBL, Harman / Kardon, AKG, and others)
• Learning and development opportunities through our award-winning HARMAN University programs
• An inclusive and diverse work environment that supports both your professional and personal development
