Full description
Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)
Office: Melbourne CBD - Hybrid (3 days in office)
Contract: 12 Months
Day Rate: Up to $725 inc. Super
The Opportunity:
A major Australian retailer with over 1 million users on its digital channels is building out test automation for its Commerce Squad, the team behind its ecommerce and in-store shopping platforms.
The Head of Engineering needs someone to set the principles, patterns and architecture for automated testing, then build a TypeScript foundation the rest of the squad can pick up and extend.
This isn't a role for an automation tester looking to move into engineering. It suits an engineer who already sees quality as part of the build, and full-stack engineers who've moved into quality engineering will feel right at home.
You’ll work across:
- Building a reusable automation foundation, including fixtures, utilities, test data, config and reporting
- Automate critical customer journeys, APIs and integrations at the right level
- Get automated tests into CI/CD and make them part of the Definition of Done
- Work out whether a failing test is a product bug, a test bug or an environment issue
- Write the documentation and examples, then coach engineers to own their own automation
- Contribute to production TypeScript services and Azure infrastructure when needed
Current stack includes:
- TypeScript, Node.js and Bun
- PHP and Magento 2 legacy services
- A live retail environment where reliability and scale matter
What you’ll bring:
- Strong TypeScript and Node.js engineering, with production software behind you as well as tests
- Proof you’ve designed an automation strategy and put it into delivery, not just written tests inside someone else’s framework
- Hands-on UI, API, integration and end-to-end automation in CI/CD, using tools like Playwright, Cypress, Jest or Vitest
- The judgement to decide what to automate, what to leave alone and at what level
- Working Azure knowledge, plus enough PHP to troubleshoot legacy Magento 2 services
- Exposure to performance testing (k6), contract testing or infrastructure as code
- Clear communication and the ability to influence engineers and stakeholders, not just report back to them
- Ecommerce or transactional systems experience is a strong plus
