What Your Day Will Look Like:
As a Traffic Engineering Professional Engineer, you will lead the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of traffic engineering elements for complex transportation infrastructure projects, serving as a technical resource and trusted advisor throughout the project lifecycle. You will apply advanced engineering principles and independent professional judgment to develop innovative, safe, and efficient traffic solutions that improve mobility, optimize operations, and enhance roadway safety for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users. Responsibilities include leading the preparation and review of traffic studies, traffic control plans, signal and ITS designs, signing and pavement marking plans, work zone traffic management strategies, and safety evaluations in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local standards.
In this role, you will provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary project teams, oversee design development from concept through final delivery, and ensure the quality, constructability, and regulatory compliance of all traffic engineering work products. You will collaborate closely with project managers, roadway designers, planners, public agencies, and clients to identify project needs, evaluate alternatives, mitigate operational impacts, and develop practical solutions that support project goals and stakeholder expectations. Additionally, you will mentor junior engineers and technical staff, contribute to business development efforts, and help advance the firm's traffic engineering capabilities while delivering high-quality projects on schedule and within budget.
What You'll Do:
- Lead the development and delivery of traffic engineering design plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates for transportation projects.
- Design and oversee traffic control systems including traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, lighting, and work zone traffic control.
- Perform and review traffic engineering calculations, modeling, and analyses, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, agency criteria, and client requirements.
- Coordinate and integrate traffic design activities across multidisciplinary teams; provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
- Support project engineers and managers with quality control reviews, schedule tracking, risk management, and coordination of traffic-related design deliverables.
- Support and interpret intersection, corridor, and multimodal traffic studies as they relate to design implementation and final construction plans.
- Prepare engineer’s opinions of probable construction cost (OPCC) and participate in agency and public meetings as the traffic engineering representative.
