UI/Accessibility Expert - Front-End Tech Lead

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a UI/Accessibility Expert - Front-End Tech Lead based in the United States.

We are seeking an experienced UI/Accessibility Expert - Front-End Tech Lead to provide technical leadership for the development of staff-facing user interfaces. This senior-level position combines advanced front-end engineering expertise with accessibility leadership and architectural oversight. You will guide the development of scalable, maintainable applications using Angular, SASS, and HTML while establishing consistent engineering standards. A key focus will be ensuring compliance with accessibility regulations and implementing established design systems, including the U.S. Web Design System. You will also lead code reviews, mentor developers, and drive improvements to development workflows and CI/CD pipelines. Working closely with Java backend teams, you will help deliver secure, accessible, and high-quality digital solutions in a government-oriented environment.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will lead front-end engineering activities, define technical standards, and ensure that accessibility and quality remain central throughout the development lifecycle. Your responsibilities will include:

-
Serve as the technical lead for the front-end codebase, establishing architecture, technical direction, and coding standards across Angular, SASS, and HTML.

-
Develop, review, and maintain high-quality front-end components and interfaces for staff-facing MIUI screens.

-
Implement and enforce the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) and applicable state design system standards across the project.

-
Define and oversee the accessibility strategy, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA, Section 508, and applicable Title I and Title II requirements.

-
Conduct accessibility assessments using automated testing tools, screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver, and manual keyboard navigation.

-
Lead code and design reviews, mentor front-end developers, and promote engineering best practices.

-
Improve, maintain, and optimize front-end CI/CD processes and deployment pipelines.

-
Identify architectural gaps, recommend technical improvements, and establish the front-end technical roadmap.

-
Collaborate with Java backend teams to integrate APIs and services, without requiring Java development.

-
Create and maintain technical documentation, architecture decision records, and engineering process guidelines.

-
Apply secure development practices aligned with government security standards and sensitive data handling requirements.

Requirements

The ideal candidate is a senior front-end engineer with proven technical leadership experience, strong accessibility expertise, and the ability to establish reliable engineering practices. The following qualifications are required:

-
Proven experience as a Front-End Tech Lead or senior-level front-end engineer.

-
Expert-level proficiency in Angular, SASS, and HTML.

-
Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining design systems, with strong preference for hands-on experience with USWDS.

-
Formal accessibility certification, such as CPACC, WAS, or an equivalent qualification.

-
Practical experience conducting accessibility testing using automated tools, screen readers, and manual keyboard navigation.

-
Strong understanding of CI/CD processes, front-end deployment workflows, and development pipelines.

-
Ability to collaborate effectively with Java backend engineering teams and integrate APIs and services.

-
Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and code review experience, with a track record of driving engineering standards and best practices.

-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical documentation and knowledge sharing.

-
Understanding of government security standards and requirements for handling sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications:

-
Experience with Section 508 and Title I/Title II accessibility compliance.

-
Previous experience working in government or public-sector environments.

-
Experience defining engineering standards and leading technical or process improvement initiatives.

-
Familiarity with enterprise-scale front-end architectures, reusable component libraries, and design systems.

-
Experience producing technical documentation, runbooks, architecture decision records, or engineering process guides.

Benefits

-
Remote work opportunity for candidates based locally in Iowa.

-
Senior-level technical leadership role with significant influence over front-end architecture and engineering standards.

-
Opportunity to drive accessibility initiatives and contribute to inclusive, compliant digital experiences.

-
Collaboration with experienced front-end and Java backend engineering teams.

-
Opportunity to mentor developers and shape technical processes and development practices.
