Wire Room Manager

About Shepherd Electric Supply

Since 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved and reliability truly matters. We move materials accurately and on time so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we’ll come through.

Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place.

Why This Role Matters

Wire is not a commodity — it is one of the most technically precise and high-stakes products we handle. A wrong cut cannot be undone. A missed special order stalls a job site. A material tracking error creates inventory problems that surface downstream, long after the moment they could have been caught.

The Wire Room Manager owns the accuracy, efficiency, and output of one of the most operationally critical functions in the Laurel Distribution Center. When the wire room runs right — cuts are accurate, special orders are handled with urgency, material tracking is current, and the team knows exactly what is expected — the entire operation moves with confidence. That starts with you.

How This Role Connects to Our Compass

We Keep Our Promises:

Wire cuts are where orders become real. When you cut accurately and on time, contractors stay on schedule and customers get exactly what they ordered. An error at the wire room ripples to the job site — you own making sure that never happens.

We Stay Hungry:

You are always asking how the wire room can run faster, more accurately, and with less waste. You surface patterns — recurring cut errors, material tracking gaps, communication breakdowns — and fix root causes, not symptoms.

We Grow Together:

Your team grows because you invest in it. You develop your wire room staff so the function does not depend on you being present for every cut. Cross-functional coordination — with sales, fulfillment, and purchasing — is part of how you show up every day.

We Own It:

You hold yourself accountable first. Timecards, performance, material tracking — none of it slips because you stay on top of it. When a process breaks down, you redesign it. When someone on your team is struggling, you engage — you do not wait to be asked.

We Go Above & Beyond:

Sales trusts that large and special wire orders are handled with urgency and precision. The operations team knows your material tracking is current. Nothing falls through the cracks because you treat every order — routine or complex — like it matters.

Key Outcomes

Organized by what matters, not just what you do.

Wire Cutting Accuracy & Order Fulfillment

• Assist in and oversee daily wire cuts — accurate to specification, every time

• Ensure cut orders are verified before staging — catch errors at the wire room, not at the job site

• Handle large and special wire orders with urgency, precision, and proactive communication to sales

• Maintain cut efficiency so order flow stays on schedule without sacrificing accuracy

Material Tracking & Inventory Integrity

• Maintain accurate material tracking sheets in Excel — current, complete, and reliable

• Ensure wire room inventory reflects actual stock — discrepancies are investigated, not ignored

• Coordinate with purchasing and fulfillment teams when material shortfalls or overages arise

• Flag recurring material or tracking issues to the Operations Manager for systemic review

Team Leadership & Development

• Select, onboard, and develop wire room staff so the function executes without depending on heroics

• Manage timecards, performance evaluations, and day-to-day accountability with consistency and fairness

• Coach and hold team members accountable through direct feedback — not just documentation

• Delegate clearly, follow up on completion, and build a team that holds itself to a standard

• Escalate performance or conduct concerns to the Operations Manager promptly and without delay

Cross-Functional Communication & Sales Support

• Communicate proactively with sales representatives on large, special, or time-sensitive wire orders

• Coordinate with fulfillment and shipping when wire orders affect outbound timing or staging

• Flag issues early — material shortages, cut discrepancies, capacity constraints — before they compound

• Represent the wire room reliably in cross-departmental coordination — your word is trusted

Equipment, Facility & Safety

• Maintain a safe, organized wire room — equipment functional, work areas clear, hazards addressed before they become incidents

• Oversee equipment inspections and ensure maintenance needs are reported and resolved proactively

• Operate and ensure team compliance with pallet jack and reach truck certification requirements

• Model and enforce safety compliance on every shift — never treat it as a formality

Operational Flexibility & Continuous Improvement

• Be willing to cover other shifts when operational needs require it — the Laurel DC runs 24 hours, Monday through Friday

• Surface inefficiencies and workflow friction in the wire room — and act on them, not just report them

• Recommend and implement process changes that improve cut accuracy, throughput, or team capacity

• Support broader DC operations as assigned by the Operations Manager

What Success Looks Like

After 90 days, you and your supervisor should both be able to point to these markers:

• Wire cuts are accurate — errors tied to the wire room are rare and addressed at root cause when they occur

• Large and special wire orders are handled with urgency and communicated to sales without prompting

• Material tracking sheets are current, complete, and trusted by operations and purchasing

• The wire room team knows what is expected and executes without being managed by the hour

• Equipment is inspected, certified, and operated safely every shift

• The Operations Manager trusts that the wire room runs correctly when they are not watching

• At least one meaningful process improvement has been identified, tested, and implemented in your first 90 days

• Your team is developing — individuals are growing in capability and taking on more ownership over time

Who Thrives Here

This role is a strong fit if:

• You lead from the floor — you know the work well enough to step in, and you would rather coach than just correct

• You take pride in precision and hold your team to a standard where the details matter

• You would rather flag a problem early than hope it works out

• You are steady under pressure and can balance urgent special orders with daily volume

• You communicate clearly and proactively — with your team, with sales, and with leadership

• You see every process as something that can be improved, and you follow through on making it better
